Characterizing autonomous Maxwell demons
نویسندگان
چکیده
We distinguish traditional implementations of autonomous Maxwell demons from related linear devices that were recently proposed, not relying on the notions measurements and feedback control. In both cases a current seems to flow against its spontaneous direction (imposed, e.g., by thermal or electric gradient) without external energy intake. However, in latter case, this inversion may only be apparent. Even if currents exchanged between system reservoirs are inverted (by creating additional independent demon), is enough conclude original through has been inverted. show distinction can revealed locally measuring fluctuations system-reservoir currents.

متن کاملDemons : Maxwell ’ S Demon , Szilard ’ S Engine and Landauer ’ S Erasure – Dissipation Laszlo
This talk addressed the following questions in the public debate at HoTPI: (i) energy dissipation limits of switches, memories and control; (ii) whether reversible computers are possible, or does their concept violate thermodynamics; (iii) Szilard’s engine, Maxwell’s demon and Landauer’s principle: corrections to their exposition in the literature; (iv) whether Landauer’s erasure– dissipation p...
متن کاملImplementing Demons and Ratchets
Experimental results show that ratchets may be implemented in semiconductor and chemical systems, bypassing the second law and opening up huge gains in energy production. This paper summarizes or describes experiments and results on systems that effect demons and ratchets operating in chemical or electrical domains. One creates temperature differences that can be harvested by a heat engine. A s...
متن کاملDemons in Physics
Maxwell’s ”finite being” was born in 1867, as one ”who knows the paths and velocities of all the molecules” ([7], p.213), and who, unlike us, is ”clever enough” ([7], p.213), and can violate the second law of thermodynamics. It was baptized as a demon by Lord Kelvin ([7], p. 214), and ever since has fueled the discussions in the foundations of statistical mechanics. Since its inception, and con...
